ROOT CANAL THERAPY
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL THERAPY?
Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure that is performed to save a damaged or infected tooth. The procedure involves removing the damaged or infected pulp, which is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. After the pulp is removed, the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, and then filled and sealed with a material called gutta-percha. A crown or other type of restoration is usually placed over the tooth to provide additional protection and support. Root canal therapy can be performed by a general dentist or by an endodontist, who is a specialist in treating problems with the dental pulp.
BEnefits
Root canal therapy can provide a number of benefits for your oral health and overall well-being. By saving a damaged or infected tooth, it can help prevent the need for more extensive and costly dental treatments, such as extraction and replacement with a dental implant or bridge. It can also help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with a damaged or infected tooth, such as sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, swelling, and throbbing pain. Additionally, root canal therapy can help restore the function and appearance of the affected tooth, allowing you to chew and speak with ease and confidence. With proper care and maintenance, a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy can last for many years. If you are experiencing tooth pain or other symptoms, it’s important to consult with a dental professional to determine if root canal therapy is the right treatment for you.

EVALUATION AND DIAGNOSIS
Schedule an appointment with your dentist or endodontist for an evaluation. They will review your symptoms and dental X-rays to determine if a root canal treatment is necessary.
ANESTHESIA AND ACCESS
During the procedure appointment, local anesthesia will be administered to numb the area. A small access hole will be created in the affected tooth, allowing access to the pulp tissue and root canals.
REMOVAL OF INFECTED PULP TISSUE
Using specialized files and instruments, the dentist or endodontist carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp tissue. The root canals are cleaned and shaped to eliminate bacteria and debris, preventing the spread of infection.
IRRIGATION AND DISINFECTION
The root canals are irrigated with antibacterial solutions to further disinfect and flush out remaining debris, reducing the risk of reinfection.
OBTURATION AND SEALING OF THE CANALS
The cleaned root canals are filled with gutta-percha, a biocompatible material that seals the canals and prevents bacterial re-entry. The access hole is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
RESTORATION OF THE TOOTH
After the root canal treatment, the tooth may need a final restoration to restore function and appearance. This can involve placing a dental crown or filling that matches the natural color and shape of the tooth, providing strength and protection.
TREATMENT PROCESS
Reading the steps of a dental treatment is of utmost importance to ensure a successful outcome. Each step of the treatment is crucial and builds upon the previous one. Understanding the sequence of events allows the patient to be prepared for what is to come and to be aware of any potential risks or complications. By reading the steps, patients can ask questions and clarify any doubts they may have, which in turn allows them to feel more comfortable and confident during the procedure. Additionally, knowing the steps of the treatment helps patients to take an active role in their oral health and to be aware of the long-term maintenance required for a healthy and beautiful smile.
